Dental Check-up — what it actually is

A dental check-up is a structured examination of the teeth, gums, bite and soft tissues. It is the simplest way to find decay, gum inflammation or a cracked restoration before it becomes painful.

You leave knowing what is healthy, what should be watched and which problems need treatment first.

Signs you may need it

One of these on its own is worth a look. Two or more, and it is worth booking rather than waiting to see whether it settles.

  • It has been six months or longer since your last examination
  • Bleeding gums or persistent bad breath
  • Sensitivity, food trapping or a rough edge
  • A filling, crown or denture no longer feels right

How it is done here

The appointment begins with your concerns and medical history, followed by an examination of every tooth, the gums, bite and soft tissues. Small digital X-rays are suggested only where they would change the diagnosis or plan.

What to expect, step by step

These are genuinely sequential — each step depends on the one before it, which is why some treatments cannot be finished in a single visit.

Questions patients ask about a dental check-up

How often should I have a check-up?

For many people six to twelve months is appropriate. Your interval depends on decay risk, gum health and ongoing treatment.

Will I need an X-ray?

Not automatically. An X-ray is recommended only when it adds information that cannot be seen directly.
